Justice is one of the four Stoic virtues. It was broken down by the Stoics into the virtues of devotion, honesty, equity/impartial, and fair dealing. Doing what is right and fair, especially when things are difficult, is the essence of this virtue. Those who possess a strong sense of justice defend themselves, their larger communities, and society at large. The power of “distribution,” or giving others what is due them, was another idea held by the Stoics. Making sure people are treated with respect and dignity can be a tremendous benefit. Yet, it is also about ensuring that criminals receive their proper punishments, and this has trickled down into the present-day legal justice systems.
